New Year, New Project

I've been away from the blog for a while, focusing on family and holidays.

Oh, who am I kidding?

My son started Kindergarten back in August and I'm still reeling from the change of schedule. And my poor blog has taken a back seat.

But I got a new Macbook! Maybe that will help.

Who am I kidding?!

I did finally find some inspiration for the yards and yards of fabric my mother has been sending me from Africa. She is a short-term (if you can call 18 months short, when your mama is across the ocean) missionary associate stationed in Congo, where she teaches teenage girls how to sew. That's what we tell people, anyway. It's obvious from my stash of batiks and wax block prints (totally new to me!) that the REAL reason she went to Africa was to add to my fabric addiction.

So. That's my new project for the new year. I'll still be making "the usual" dresses and outfits, and assorted other crafty awesomenesses, but I'm going to be adding a new line of clothing and accessories I'm calling, "Let's Congo!" using the fabrics she's sent me. Squeeeeeee! I'm so super duper excited to debut the first fruits of this little labor of love.

Oh, did I forget?! This new line will also involve donations to missions in some way. I haven't sorted it out yet, but probably 10% of the sales will go to a charity that works in Africa. Which is the real love part of this labor. I'm excited!

Today's menu consisted of lots of fabric, hot glue, and staples --provided by my friend, the electric staple gun. (Insert Tim Allen's Home Improvement man-bark here!)

I started out by recovering a bulletin board in my son's room. Super simple, quick fix for an outgrown memo board. One thin layer of batting, wrap it in fabric, add a few little details, and done!

I thought the nails and hooks were very masculine!

Then I tackled some wall art for sister's room. This time I covered three 16x20 canvases with fabric, attached fabric letters, and embellished with scrappy flowers and buttons.

I'm very pleased with the outcome.

Mostly because I love this fabric soooo much! I really don't think I could dislike anything made with this.

It's going to be a sad day when I either 1) run out of fabric

or 2) run out of walls/windows/pillows/thingies to cover with it.

Oh, and I finally am starting to figure out the manual settings on my DSLR! I've been trying to learn myself, because that's how I roll, but until today it didn't really click. My kids' rooms are hard, because the lighting is bad but I'm finally getting it! Excited!

Pinterest Wreath

I've recently become addicted to Pinterest. Specifically, the iphone app. It's so fun to peruse the pictures while I lay on the couch or while hubby watches sports on TV. I have tons of pins on tons of boards! Last night I made my first Pinterest craft-- a scrappy fabric wreath!

It's no secret I like bright colors! I really love orange, and I think it looks great on our dark red, slightly outdated front door.

It even fits nicely behind the storm door. Win!

I used a large metal ring that I found in the jewelry section at Hobby Lobby for $2.47. Stuck a small nail in the back side top of the door and hung the fabric loop on it. Done. And Simple!

Pillowage

It's neat how throw pillows can really bring together the decor in a room. Lately, every bedroom in our house has gotten a new pillow or two. I started with this one.

I found this neat printable chandelier iron-on. I have to admit, my little inkjet printer spit out a gray chandelier.. so I used a black paint marker over it after I ironed it on-- which I would assume makes this pillow not very washer-friendly. Good thing it's on a grownup bed!

Next, the boy's bedroom got two new pillows. I just made a simple envelope pillow over for the larger pillow, and then used some scraps to make a small pillow.

It really ties in the curtains and wall art!

Now, the girl's room is a forever work-in-progress. I just finished the valance this week finally,

and these two floral throw pillows.

Again, another simple envelope cover for an existing square pillow, and a smaller envelope with three scrap flowers sewn on. For some reason, my children love to destroy pillows -- every button, tie or cute "extra" inevitably ends up torn off. I wonder what the fascination is... anyway, these flowers had to be sewn down tight. I sewed them in a circle radiating outward through all the layers until all the little petals felt secure.

I love the difference it makes!

Some projects don't turn out like you want them to. And some blow your expectations so far out of the water they end up in orbit around the earth. This is one of those times.

Remember this little gem? I picked it up at a flea market/junk shop in my small town for $20. As soon as I got it home and started inspecting it, I thought, "Crap. I got taken. This thing is a hunk of junk!" It has potential on the outside, but the back, corners, insides, etc. were not looking (or smelling) promising. It sat in the garage for about a week while I mulled over the possibilities. Then I took it to my friend Jessica and pleaded for her to help this poor wretched dresser become lovely again. And that is exactly what she did.

At home, I added two coats of polycrylic finish to it, and here it is in the room. It is painted to match an accent fabric in the bedding (the small ruffle around the pillow shams), and I've yet to make some larger shams, and a valance with that same fabric, which will really tie it all together.

Over and above anything I ever dreamed this hunkajunk could become! I tell you, she is a miracle worker.

Still, the inside was a problem. This dresser was meant to be a nightstand in my preschool daughter's room, and the drawers will be holding her clothing. So, they must be clean. And clean they were NOT. I scrubbed, sanitized, scraped, and still the smell and staining was ewwwgross. So, I had to cover it up. Here is what I came up with.

Scrapbook paper leftovers, Mod Podge, and then one quick coat of polycrylic to finish-- and perfection, no? Now this odd duck is beautiful, inside and out.

Be jealous of my serendipitous one-of-a-kind success!

Distressed Dresser - before and after

I have had this thing finished for a couple of weeks, but forgot to post the pictures. Here is the dresser I painted to match the bed from the previous post. I L-O-V-E the pieces together.

Before: This dresser belonged to a friend, whose boys are grown and it wasn't being used anymore. It was originally painted (or stained) black, but her husband had started taking off the black already. I received it as a "project in progress" and was more than happy to transform this boy dresser into a shiny chic girly dresser!

After lots of sanding and about three coats of white paint:

Finished! I changed out the knobs to some fun mismatched glass knobs, and again added the wooden scrolly doohickeys on the cabinet door.

Doesn't the distressing look fantastic? Thanks again to my friend Jess!!

Here it is in Carly's room. I'm terrible at taking indoor pictures, so you get what you get, but I think it looks great with the yellow walls, and the pink and green accessories.

Next up: my crazy self bought this nightstand at a flea market..

It's a nightstand (or something) that looks like a cabinet with doors, except it is actually two drawers thast slide out. It's interesting! It's unique! It's gaudy! And sooo ugly!

I LOVE IT!

.....any guesses what my plans are for this gem?! It will go in the same room, but it ain't gonna be white, that's for sure! And it won't be one solid color. My husband just shakes his head at me.. :-)

A New Adventure

I always have a project. I'm a project kind of girl. And I live in a project kind of house (it's not really a fixer-upper, but it's a needs-to-be-updated-er).

My daughter's room has been that room in this house. The one that is really fine the way it is, but I just don't love it. So of course, my project-needing self had to change it. I am far from finished, and let me tell you, I have GRAND plans for this room... but my next step was this bed.

It is an antique headboard and footboard that belonged to my husband's grandmother.

I have always loved it, but have not had a place for it in years. It was being stored in our attic. No more! I LOVE the way it turned out.

Perfect for my little girl, don't you think?

She loves it.

This a little bit of "why hasn't she updated her blog in forever?" I've been busy busy busy working on projects!

This is a finished nursery that I made the crib bedding and curtains for. I also made the diaper stacker and the changing pad covers. Jessica at Sparkles Boutique did the wall letters (ah-mazing!!) and the lamp shade. She is an amazingly talented lady. Camille (baby's mom) is a wonderful decorator and has done an outstanding job on this room. It's absolutely gorgeous!

And now I think I can say, officially, that I "do" curtains. I've been in denial for quite some time. :-)

Pillowcase Dress Tutorial

Alright, here it is! I originally learned how to make a pillowcase dress from this blog, and I still use basically the same technique, but when I went to find that old tutorial, the pictures were gone and it had all been redone. So I did my own tutorial and am going to send it to my mom in Africa for her girls to learn!

To make a pillowcase dress you will need:
- 12 inches of 1/4" wide elastic (not shown), cut in half (two 6-inch lengths)
- scissors
- sewing machine
- straight pins
- steam iron
- fabric cut as follows:
- two strips 2.5" wide the entire width of fabric on fold (2.5" x ~45") for straps OR 45" of extra wide double fold bias tape.
- 45" wide piece of fabric cut to the length of choice (see size table below)
- optional coordinating piece for trim at hem - 4" x 45"

See the cuts laid out below:

Step 1: Fold the dress inside out, and sew the raw edges together, making a square with open top and bottom.

Move the seam to the middle of the square, as shown below:

Then, fold the entire square in half.

So, you have to folds, folded together.

Press the edge down to make creases. You only need to press down about 8 inches or so. This makes it easier to find the middle later.

Now, take the scissors and cut an upside down "J" shape in the top edge, through all the folds of fabric. Discard those two pieces of fabric.

Unfold and now you have this:

Step two: Make straps using the two skinny lengths of fabric. We are essentially making extra wide double fold bias tape. Feel free to substitute if you have some on hand and want to save time.

With an iron, press down the short end.

Next start down one side of the strip and press in about 3/8." Repeat on the other side.

Then fold strip in half and press again, so that you have a double folded strip with an open edge.

This is what one strap looks like:

This is the strap next to a real piece of bias tape. Same concept.

Step Three: On the dress, fold over the top raw edge about 5/8" to make a casing. Press. Repeat on the other top raw edge.

Sew near the folded over edge, making a 1/2 inch casing.

If you have a tag to attach, do it now, as your needle nears the middle seam on the back.

No take your 6-inch piece of 1/4" wide elastic and run it through the casing, using a safety pin to guide it through.

When you get to the end, put a safety pin through the entire casing and elastic about 2 inches in from the edge.

Continue pulling the elastic through, and pin the other end about 2 inches in.

So now you have this:

Repeat on the other side with the other piece of elastic.
Stitch the ends of the elastic in place very near the edge of the casing. Do this on all four elastic ends.

Here's your sewn down end. Do not take the safety pins out yet.

Now you have an inside-out dress with elastic necks. All that's left now is to attach the arm straps!

Find the creased middle of the under arm and the middle of your strap. Open up the strap and insert the dress up to the crease.

Fold the strap back over, and pin in place.

Now, starting from the end of the strap, sew close to the edge all the way down the strap, through the underarm area, and back out to the other end. Repeat for the other strap.

Here is how the seam should look on the outside:

Note: Make sure you catch both the top and the bottom of the arm strap when sewing. It takes some practice, and precise pinning and pressing.

Now you can take the safety pins out.

Pull the elastic to distribute the neck evenly.

Last, finish the bottom edge of the dress. (In this one, I added a coordinating strip at the bottom after the fact.)

Finished! The arm straps go under the arms, and the elastic casings go around the neck. Dads dressing little girls can get it backwards easily, believe me :)

Faux Wrap Halter Dress

This is a brand new design I've been working on for weeks! My first time to draft a pattern from scratch.. it is hard! I've still got some tweaks to do on the bodice to close that cleavage gap (on a children's dress? A necessary change!)

I just finished this one this afternoon - this is the fourth dress I've finished and it's still not quite right. But it's SO close I went ahead and photographed it. My model was very angry and non-cooperative. And her hair was a mess. But check out the fun dress!

The back has elastic in in to make it a flexible easy fit and to add another bit of cuteness!

(Candy helped the model cheer up slightly.)

Fun with scraps and leftovers

I love a blank slate when I'm in my manic creative mode. A plain white tank top thrills me! My daughter received a pair of jeans at Christmas that were new-to-her, but were a size too small. But they had some cute flower embroidery and detail on the pockets that I wanted to use, so I chopped them off and made a skirt! I'm ready for spring so she can wear the outfit!

Receiving Blanket PJs

Now that the kids are getting older and the factory is closed (yes, I'm admitting it now..) I decided it was high time to clean out drawers and get those little flannel infant receiving blanets out of their rooms. You know the ones, the cute packages that are so fun to get and give at showers, that match the washcloths, onesies, and sockies so you get the whole pink and purple (or green and blue) collection. You know what I'm talking about.

But once the baby is bigger than a minute, they outgrow the receiving blankets and then you are left with a stack of square shaped flannel. What to do with it?

Well, if you're me, you cut them up and make pajama pants for your BIG kids!

I actually had this on my to-do list for over a year and HAD to get it done, or my oldest would be too big for them!

You do have to use two blankets per pair once the size is above about a 2, which is why the legs are mix-matched.

I had two of the same blanket for this pair, and put a pocket on the backs instead of putting tags to show where the back is.

I actually made them a little too big, which means maximum wear! Right now they have to roll them up -- or run while holding their pant legs up, quite amusing actually -- but they should get a year or two out of each pair!

After the trial run was approved by the populace I had some more blankets, so I made 4 more pairs!

So glad I finally got that off my list AND got rid of a huge pile of flannel blankets!

Gap inspired Cardi-Wrap-Thing

Several months ago while shopping at the Gap outlet - because I rarely set foot in a regular store, but this was an outlet mall trip -- I saw this on the hanger.

My friend Jill tried it on and it looked super cute. When she took it off I opened it up and saw that it was a large rectangle of fabric with sleeves sewn on. SO super stinkin' easy to make! So I did.

Here's my version:

I used Bamboo Rayon/Cotton baby knit (just a fancy way to say Tshirt fabric made from bamboo) and it feels SO good on. Since it's a knit I didn't even finish the edges. I did hem up the sleeves a bit, but the lower edge and the neck are just a rough cut. I didn't want to ruin the nice drape of the fabric with a hem.

So whatchya think? Eh? Eh? EEEEHHHHH??

Gadget Holder {Updated}

I made this for my sister for Christmas. I forgot to get a picture of the front, but she was sweet enough to send me one. Yeah!

It has a wood button/elastic loop closure. You can slide your hand under the yellow strap and carry it clutch-style.

It is roughly the size of a Kindle (which is a fun accident, because she told me AFTER I gave it to her she was getting a Kindle for Christmas! I was just making it to hold a journal.) and has a pocket that's just the right size for an iPhone. I did that on purpose.

It also has two inside pockets to hold other chargers, earbuds, cords, whatever. I love the way it turned out!

Headband Holder for your mama

Organization is a beautiful thing. Especially when it looks like this!

This week I've been on a cleaning and organizing kick, and today I tackled this:

When my husband opens this drawer, he cringes and closes it as fast as he can. I laugh and tell him I know exactly where everything is, and I like it that way.

So maybe I lie a little.

I went through that drawer (in fact, the entire bathroom with it's three cabinets, five drawers, and one large linen closet) and now it looks like this:

And both trash cans are overflowing with expired and unused products. Feels good! Yay me!

I ran into a problem when I needed a place for my hard headbands. I've been wanting to make a smooshy fancy holder dealie and sketched up a design for something like a boudoir pillow and then quickly abandoned that idea at the thought of putting gussets on something that would grace the inside of a bathroom drawer. Then I turned to the good ole blogosphere and found this idea. I decided to use fabric and hot glue instead of paper and Mod Podge.

So here is all you need to make this cutie:

-- Large [empty] oatmeal container
-- fabric - 19 x 15" piece
-- batting - any kind will do. I used high loft and doubled it for more squish.
-- hot glue gun
-- large decorative button

Cut the batting to the size you need for your container. My piece was 34" long and 9.5 wide and I wrapped it around the can twice. Apply hot glue and start gluing and wrapping the batting around the container. You don't need to pull it too tight as you wrap, because you want it to be nice and smooshy.

I used a LOT of glue. For the batting it ended up being quite unnecessary, and really you only need to use one strip of glue around each edge (around the top and bottom of the can).

Here is my double-wrapped batting covered oatmeal can.

Now start wrapping the fabric around. Let about three inches of fabric hang over the bottom edge of the can, and let the other inch or so lay over the top (lid side).

Wrap the fabric, using a strip of glue around the edges. Pull it taut as you wrap, but not too tight. When you get to the end, fold the raw edge under and glue down. That way no raw edges of fabric are exposed. Leave the ends open where they hang over the top and bottom of the can.

Now, start tucking the ends into the can and glue down.

Keep tucking and gluing until you get it all inside.

Here's the inside of the can. It's not super cute, and if you wanted to use the inside for storage, you could mod podge some cute paper or fabric over the raw edges. I'm not planning on using mine for that, so I skipped that idea.

If not, put the lid on and you're good!

Noe for the bottom, use the same tucking and gluing technique as above. Be liberal with the hot glue.

Keep going until you get it all glued down. Notice I was a little too liberal with my glue and it oozed out in a few places. Don't do that.

Glue the button on to cover up the icky stuff in the middle, and voila! Mama's new headband holder!

I LOVE how cute my hair candy looks on it. Meow!

Super Simple Party Favor Bag

I'm always searching for a way to use up scraps and leftovers, so here's a cute and fun way!

I made these bags for my daughter's 3rd birthday party, just big enough to hold some princess wands and bead necklaces for the girls, and some rocket balls and army men for the boys. And, of course since this is me, they are completely and totally reversible! AND, they take 30 minutes to make. 45 if you're a beginner. I promise!

Ready to make one? You totally can!

All you need is:
- two 18" x 8" cuts of coordinating fabric
- 15 inches of nylon webbing
- scissors
- sewing machine
- straight pins
- iron

note: I used scraps.. which means the straps on my bags varied from 12.5" to 18.5" and they all look fab, so perfection isn't necessary.

Step 1: Gather your materials.

Fold the first piece of fabric over, right sides together, so the fold is at the bottom and the raw edges line up. Press a crease into the bottom. This makes it easier to center the gusset later.

Now, sew up the edges, starting from the fold and sewing about 1/2" from the raw edges. Do this on both sides of the fabric.

So that you have this. The fold is at the top of the picture, and the raw open edges are at the bottom (so the laying bag is upside down in the picture)

Clip the corners off.

Next, to make the gusset, open out your bag, and with one finger in the corner, spread your hands and fingers out to form a triangle. Try to line the seam up with the creased fold and pinch them together. Hopefully the photo shows this better.

(This is how your hand looks inside the bag)

Here is where you pinch the triangle together.

Now, sew a seam across the triangle, setting the point on about the 1 1/4" or 3cm line on your machine's guide plate.

Repeat for the other corner and you have this:

Notice how my left side is horrible crooked. That is because I didn't line up the seam with the crease when folding. I could (should) have gone back and redone it, but these are party favors, and like I said before, perfection isn't necessary!
Clip the seam allowances off the triangles.

Turn the first bag right side out, and see your pretty gusseted bag! Notice at the bottom how the seam and the crease don't line up? The bottom won't be exactly square because of that. I really should have fixed that. Take that as a "what not to do" lesson.

Now do the same thing for your other piece of fabric. Go ahead, go back up to the top and follow the steps again if you need to. I'll wait for you right here.

Ok, now that you have two bags. Turn one right side out and leave one inside out, like shown.

Take the one that's inside out and insert your webbing strap into it. Then line up the raw edge of the strap with the seam on one side of the bag and pin it down. Be sure to center the strap over the seam. Repeat for the other side seam.

Next, insert your other bag into the first one. They should have their right sides together, with the strap in between. Line up the seams and pin both sides.

Now, insert the open edge of the bag over the arm of your machine, and starting about two inches before the side seam, sew around the edges, with about 3/4" seam allowance.

Stop about two inches after the second side strap/seam area and backstitch/reinforce the end of the seam. This is how we are going to turn the bag out.

Turn the bag right side out. You have this when you get it all untangled:

Now decide which side you want inside (but since they are completely reversible, it doesn't matter much) and stuff it inside. Press the corners all the way open with your fingers or a safety pin. If this bag wasn't so small, I would recommend pressing the top edges flat, but it's not necessary.

Insert the open end onto the arm of your machine, and starting on one strap, sew about 1/4" in from the edge.

When you get to the opening, make sure it lines up with the rest of the edges and sew it closed. Use your free hand to guide the fabric and make sure the fabric stays pulled all the way out. Continue sewing all the way around until you meet the thread where you started.

Done!

And you have a super cute, really basic party favor bag! Or a little purse for a sassy toddler. Or a holder for army men and crayons.

Now go make a few more!

Christmas Dresses

I am in love with this fabric from Michael Miller's Christmas collection! It perfectly captures the colors and patterns that I like for Christmas-- not too dorky and not too formal. I made as many reverse knot dresses as I could and squeezed every inch out of the fabric! Carly ended up with one mess-up, which worked out beautifully for our family pictures. I also made a few boy ties to match, and they were a hit too, as usual.

...And one custom pillowcase dress and pigtail bows!

Minky Scarves

Last winter, I used some scraps of minky to make three brown scarves. One was for myself, and two were for a door prize for my Mops group. Then I decided I loved my brown scarf, so much that I made myself a white one, a camel one, and a black and white damask one.

So this winter when I started wearing my minkies, and getting compliments, and an order for one from a friend, it finally crossed my mind that I should sell them. Duh! So here are a few picture of what I have made. I still have more white and brown fabric, if anyone would like to order one! $15.

TShirt Dress Tutorial

So, you know, things happen sometimes. You screw up an order, and have to redo it. But what to do with the messed up leftover?

In this case, the back hem of the shirt I was embroidering got caught up in the embroidery hoop. *Headslap* I had to cut a hunk out of the shirt to get it out of the hoop.

What to do? You make a dress out of the messed up Tshirt.

Ready to learn how? I promise it's easy! Here we go!

What you need for a child-size dress:

*One tshirt
*Two coordinating fabrics (about 1/2 yard of the main one, and 1/3 yard of the other.)
*Sewing machine and notions

Optional Stuff:
*Serger
*Ruffle Foot

To start, cut the bottom off the shirt. On this one I had to go below the butterflies. Otherwise I would recommend cutting about two inches below the arm holes. That will give a nice empire waist look.

Next lay out your fabrics. Measure how long you want the skirt to be. This one is about 17 inches long. For the bottom band, cut a 4.5-inch side strip using the full width of the fabric. Make up the difference with the main fabric (plus one inch). This skirt is 13 after I trimmed up the edges.

Lay your main fabric down on your surface, and line up the bottom band raw edges, right sides together.

Sew raw egdes together. I'm using a serger, but of course you can use a regular sewing machine.

Next, open out the entire piece of fabric and press the new seam down. Then fold the piece in half, right sides together, and sew up the side, being sure to line up the bottom band with itself.

Now you have this: On the left is the seam you just finished, on the right is a fold. The top edge is still raw.

Now it's time to gather the skirt to fit the shirt. You can use a ruffler foot if you have one, or you can use gathering stitches to pull it up. For help with that check out this tutorial.

So now you have a chopped off tshirt and a gathered skirt.

Now take the leftover strip of coordinating fabric and fold it over longways. This one is about 2.5 inches wide. I would have liked if it was wider, like 3.5 to 4 inches. Sew raw edges together to make an inside-out tube. Use a very small seam allowance.

Leave a gap in the stitching about 4 inches long.

About one inch from the end, turn your fabric to a 45-degree angle, and sew to the fold. this makes a pretty end to your sash tie. Go back and do this on the other end as well.

Trim the seams and clip the corners of both ends. Then turn the tube right-side-out and press it flat. For help with that, click here. Sew the opening together very close to the edge. I didn't get a picture of that step.

Now you have a chopped off Tshirt, a gathered skirt, and a long sash.

Turn the shirt inside out and fit the raw edges together. Use pins liberally to keep everything in place. Adjust the ruffles or gathers to fit the width of the shirt.

Stitch on a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Make sure to put the non-stretchy fabric down on the machine's feed dogs.

Turn the dress right-side out. Pin the sash over the middle of the seam, centering it in the middle of the skirt. Stitch the sash close to the edge, stopping when you get to the sides/underarms. The sash will be attached across the front of the dress and free in the back.

Stitch the top edge in the same way.

This is what the side looks like. This is just under the sleeve of the shirt.

Hem the bottom and you are finished!

If you have a baggy shirt like this one, the sash helps to cinch it up in the back to make it more form-fitting.

Tips:

*You can adjust the measurements to make this dress for any size. In fact, this is very similar to my maxi dresses that you can see here.

*Using a more fitted tshirt and cutting the waistline a bit higher would make a more flattering shape. But we scrap-a-holics do what we can to reuse and recycle anything and everything!

Zippy Pouch Tutorial {and Giveaway!!!!} {Giveaway CLOSED}

Remember the Zippy Pouch I showed off a few posts ago? How about a tutorial? Okay, great! Here are the instructions with pictures.

To make the Zippy Pouch, you will need:

*Scraps of two different fabrics (about 1/4 yard of each)
*Scissors or a Rotary Cutter
* Cutting Board or Ruler
*Sewing Machine
*Pins
*9-inch zipper
*Fusible interfacing

Fabric cuts:
*Outside of bag: Two 8-inch by 10-inch pieces of fabric
*Lining: Two 8 x 10 pieces
* Strap: One 2.5-inch by 6 inch piece (longer (9-12 inches) if you want a wristlet handle, shorter (3-5 inches) if you just want to clip a key ring to it)
*Zipper End covers: Two 1.5x2.5 pieces in the contrasting fabric
*Interfacing: two 8x10 pieces, and one to fit the strap piece

1. Fuse the interfacing into the main fabric. Go ahead and fuse the strap piece too, and set it aside.

2. Fold the zipper end covers in half lengthwise (bring the short ends together) and press. The photo below shows the full size piece on top, and the folded piece on bottom.

Now, open it up and fold the ends in to the fold and press. (Basically, you are making a very short piece of binding/bias tape).

Insert the end of the zipper into the piece all the way to the fold. You may need to trim the end of the zipper some. Be sure to cover the little metal piece up enough that when you stitch over it you won't break your needle on it.

See? Nice and snug in there. Now, stitch very close to the edge of the cover, being careful not to hit that metal piece.

For the other end, repeat the process with the pressing and folding, but this time open the zipper (to get the zipper pull out of the way) and pin the zipper closed. Stitch the same way as before, very close to the edge, being careful to avoid the metal piece.

Here is your zipper after the ends are sewn on.

Now, take your main fabric and lay it on your surface. Place the zipper on it, right side down with the zipper pull on the left.

Then place your lining fabric on top, right side down, lining up the top edges neatly. Pin in place.

Stitch the entire length of the fabric, through the zipper ends, on the outside edge of the zipper. Turn the whole thing so the wrong sides of the fabrics are together, and press.

Next, lay your second main fabric piece on your surface, right side up. Lay the pressed piece we've been working on on top, main fabric down. Then lay your last peice of lining fabric on top, right side down. Pin all pieces together. Be sure your like fabrics are together-- lining to lining and main to main. Stitch in the same way as before - close to the zipper but not too close, on the outside edge. Hopefully this picture shows the stack well.

Once you stitch, you will have this:

Now it's time to make the handle. Fold your fabric lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch with a small seam allowance.

Turn the tube to the outside using a safety pin, loop turner, or this simple but ingenious trick.

Press the strap flat with the seam in the middle. Topstitch close to both edges if desired. (I did.)

Arrange the fabrics to that the like pieces are together now. Pin your strap near the zipper, in between the main fabric layers. Be sure the raw end of fabric match up and the strap goes toward the inside.

Also, pull the zipper end covers toward the lining fabric, which make the zipper itself fold toward the main fabric. Be sure to sew it like that. Stitch around the entire rectangle of fabric, leaving a 3-4 inch gap in the bottom of the lining for turning. Also, when sewing over the zipper ends, try to sew right next the them, and not through them. If you have to sew through them, it's okay too.

Almost finished! Clip the corners and turn the bag right side out. Press the lining, and sew the hole closed, stitching very close the the edge.

Stuff the lining inside the bag, and press the entire bag.. And there you go! Stuff some stuff inside and go show it off!

Weekend Crafty Fun-ness

When we have slow weekends -- meaning no birthday parties, outings, or other reasons to leave the house for lots of hours -- I love to get "me" time in my sewing room. If I don't have a pressing business deadline, the freedom I feel with a few hours with my sewing machine and stash of goodies is amazing! Special thanks to my amazing hubby who lets me use that time to create.

This weekend was one of those.. and I ended it with four items I am pretty proud of!

I'll start with the least impressive.. at least from the pictures.

Since I don't have an adult-sized mannequin, my bathroom door has to suffice for this one.. anyway. It's a maxi dress made from a fitted t-shirt from Old Navy, and stretchy jersey knit fabric. Cute, stylish, AND comfortable! Forgive me for not modeling... but I promise it is even cuter on!

It's actually very simple to make. I cut off the shirt just under my bust, gathered up 60 inches of skirt fabric, and sewed it on. For the belty thing, I cute the remaining part of the tshirt into one LONG strip and wrpped it around a bunch of times, tied it in a bow, and voila! Done. You can do this in smaller sizes for little girls too. Anyone want a tutorial for this?

Next, I tried a new pattern for a peasant dress. I used a pattern for this one, and there are lots of things I will change to make it my own. I added the pockets for my little collector, and she LOVES this dress.

I also threw together this peasant dress using a different pattern. Love how simple it is, and cute too! I added the pocket on this one, again, for my little collector. It's a snowflake fabric with accents of penguins and snowmen. Normaly, I'm not a character kind of person, but these were pretty nondescript and whimsical, so I went with it. She likes her "blue dress with penguins."

btw, you can really tell in the above picture that my mannequin has seen its better days. It was actually brown at one time, but then my kids happened, and it lost a leg. My cousin welded it back on and painted it almond for me. It still sits a little wonky, but it is whole again! The hem on the dress is not uneven, just the picture!

And now... my weekend masterpiece! I made myself a jacket out of flocked matte jersey.. which was a mistake I made when ordering fabric online. I was expecting STRETCHY material.. I got stretchy material.. perfect for making tailored pieces with a little stretch.. like this:

I used an exact pattern for this, with only a few deviations (aka messups) but thankfully they are all on the inside and no one is the wiser!

And no, it's not for sale, nor will I make any more, but you are welcome to borrow my pattern! ha!

Saturday Afternoon Scrappy Wallet

So, I made a few little zipper pouches this week, and realized my big thick leather Fossil wallet wouldn't fit inside. I SO wanted to carry one with me this week, but until I had a smaller or more flexible place to put my essentials it would have to wait. So, I searched tutorials, gathered ideas, and made this:

I am loving the colors! I used the basic instructions from this tutorial, then added some extras that I needed - more card spaces and a larger space for bills.

IF I make any more of these, I will change a few other processes to make it even better, but... I have a new wallet! Woo!

I would be willing to do a tutorial of this wallet, if there is any interest. I just need to hear from you!

This project.... I worked on in stages for about 8 months. I finally got some pictures of it! Dreadful, disgraceful pictures taken with my iPhone, but pictures nonetheless. Others may have heard me refer to this project as "The Minky Room" or even "The biggest mistake I've ever made," or even "The project from HADES!!!!!" But the end result is great, huh?

*Just pretend, for one minute, that the photos are decent.*

The photo above is floor-to-ceiling reversible curtains with huge black tassel trim.. altogether weighing 22 pounds! Below is the view from the inside of the curtains into the room. In the background is the left bed with green/zebra curtains.

The curtains under the loft bed.. also reversible and quite heavy!

The reverse side of the loft bed curtains.. makes a cozy little homework nook/cave!

By far the most unique (and difficult!) thing in the room.. a valance for an arch-top window. *Pardon the blinding sunlight*

I was pleasantly surprised at how good it looked. All I saw were giant mounds of orange, lime, zebra, and pink minky all over my office for months, and never got to see the end product all at once. I'm pretty proud!

Oh yes, and don't EVER ask me to do this again with Minky. Ever. At all.

Zippy Pouch

I made this, just for fun, and to prove to myself that I could do it. I followed the instructions on this tutorial, but made it bigger, and just love how it turned out! I'm going to change the design up a bit and make it "mine" and make some more of these!

Duvet Cover, Bed Skirt and Shams

I finally got around to making my daughter's big girl bedding this weekend. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. I need to fluff the bed a bit more with pillows and frufrus but for the basics, I'm pleased!

The duvet cover is done with Amy Butler's Love fabrics. I stuffed an old comforter in it, and as you can see at the bottom I'm still working out the kinks to get it to fall straight.

For the back of the duvet I used a queen size flat sheet, cheap and easy.

The shams have a small ruffle around the edges. I did a 12-stitch pleat, mostly by hand since my pleater is on the fritz. again.

For the backs of the shame I used scraps, which were not quite long enough to overlap, thus the ribbon ties. The pattern goes different directions, but eh, it's the back.

The bedskirt has one double box pleat on each side. I used an old sheet for the decking.

Closeup of the pleat. It started as a simple box pleat but I wanted it to kick out more so I folded it an extra time under there, which did the trick nicely.

I'm pleased with the outcome and surprised at how easy it was! Really, it was easy. So easy I thought about writing a tutorial for it. Is anyone interested?

Ruffle Necklace

I've recently become obsessed with following craft blogs. I have dreams and aspirations of having one of those awesome craft blogs myself, and I'm doing the best I can here. My favorite things to see are repurposed clothing tutorials, like how to take a ratty old t-shirt and make it into something fabulous! Like a cardigan, or a toddler dress. Both of these I WILL make. Soon.

Anyway, my newest favorite blog, as you have seen if you clicked the links above, is Happy Together. She makes the coolest stuff! And is so nice to post step-by-step instructions with lots of pictures, so her readers can make cool stuff too. I recently saw a necklace that I HAD to make. It was one of those opportune moments when I had everything I needed at arm's reach, so I just DID it. It was a simple ruffle necklace that I made with leftover chiffon and a necklace cord I already had. It took 30 minutes, and only because I had to make it twice because I did bad eyeballmath the first time. And then, because I'm partially insane and have vain tendencies, I uploaded a picture of myself wearing said necklace to her flickr photo group. This was at least three weeks ago, maybe four. Look what I found on her blog tonight..

The Shirt

If anyone knows me personally, they would know, or easily guess, that I do not make a habit of following directions. If you need proof in my personal life, this blog post describes it well.

So I took on a personal challenge last night and decided I would make myself a top using one of the *many* patterns I've collected over the past couple of years, with grand plans to do them all.

Here is the result:

I also made this hiphugger skirt for a friend. She makes these sweet handbags and we did a trade. I am really loving my new Amy Butler Love fabric! It is SO nice to work with!

p.s. the background is my bathroom wall that I retextured last weekend.. it will eventually be painted a light gray-green called "Willow Tree." I've been busy getting my craft on lately!

'Nother Name Banner

I made this for my friend Meg, who is having her second baby - a little girl this time - and is using the same crib bedding she used for her son. I helped host a baby shower for her, and my fellow hostesses decided we wanted to help Meg "girlify" the room a bit. One thing was to make a banner with baby Rachel's name on it. I also made a toy organizer and put some ribbons on it, but sadly did not take a picture of it.

Here is my latest creation. I took the pictures in Carly's bed, in her yellow room, which just isn't quite right for modeling a baby boy's bedding. I'm working on a new set up for the future.. due to the fact that my baby girl is getting close to moving up into a bigger bed (sniff.... pout.... totally fall apart....)

For this set, I used a red and white checkered fabric with black minky dot and a country blue solid cotton, but the star of the show (besides the yet-to-be-named baby boy due to arrive in the near future!) is most definitely the fabulous striped fabric. It is rich with primary colors in varying shades, widths, and textures. Absolutely magnificent!

An awkward, just plain not-good view, but..... cozy, eh?

Uncle Stephen's Army Princess

Camera Strap Cover Tutorial

This one is very similar to the cord cover with one extra step at the end.

1. Measure your camera strap. Cut two strips of contrasting minky fabric to that length +2 inches, and about 4-5 inches wide. I allowed for more width because minky is a wiggly fabric and you can always cut off the extra. If you are going to use cotton fabric, you could get away with 3.5-4 inches of width per piece.

For this example, my strap is 24 inches long, so I cut two pieces of minky fabric 26 inches long x 5 inches wide.

2. With RIGHT sides together, pin the pieces together about every 2-3 inches (Trust me on this, when using minky, pins are your friend!) down one of the long sides. Sew using 3/4 inch seam allowance.

3. Open out the cover and lay it flat, RIGHT side down. Fold over one of the short ends one inch and sew. We're not even going to bother with sealing the ends since it will be inside the cover. Repeat this on the other short end.

Here's the sewn end:

4. Fold cover in half, RIGHT sides together, and pin every 2-3 inches again (or don't unpin it from before).

Sew a seam parallel to the first one, using the width necessary for your camera strap plus 3/4 inch. My strap is 1.5 inches wide, so my seam is 2 1/4" inches away from the first seam. This is one of those "eyeball" things for me, but you can mark it with a washable sewing marker if you are a perfectionist. :)

Trim the excess off.

4a. If you want, you can taper the ends a bit to fit to your strap a little better by sewing a diagonal seam from the open edge of the cover to the seam. I didn't take a picture of that, but you can see it on the finished cover.

5. Time to turn it out! Grab your loop turner or a large safety pin, hook one edge, and work it through itself until the end comes through. There are some good instructions and pictures on the cord cover tutorial.

6. Once it's turned out, topstitch down both long edges about 1/4" from the edge. This will give it a tailored look and keep the minky from twisting around, because minky is wiggly like that.

7. Slip it on your camera and you are DONE! I went c-raaaazy and made a matching strap cover for my camera case too. Same directions!

I've decided to have my very first AlexiaJean giveaway! I've actually got two lined up, one for boys and one for girls... after I see how these go I may be doing more! (Something for mom, maybe?)

It's done!! It's finally done! I took me six months, but it's done! Ok, well, technically it took about a week, but it took me six months to find that week. The black and white crib bedding set is finished!! I delivered it this evening to Jess at Sparkles and I *think* she liked it. I know she LOVED it! AND, even better. IT'S FOR SALE! Just wait till tomorrow or so when Jess gets her crib in the store and gets it all set up, and then run over and visit her!

I would just like to say how much I LOVED doing this set. Favorite set I've ever done! I hugged it goodbye when I left it, since I feel like it's become part of me these last few months. I stared at that box of fabric for three months (while I worked on other stuff), planned, drew, petted the soft zebra minky, changed my mind, redrew, and then created it with my own two hands. Every stitch is MINE!

And now, the pictures. I took these in Carly's room, which has yellow walls, so disregard that. Also, while editing the photos, I noticed how dirty the crib has gotten with a toddler sleeping in it. So disregard that too. Anyway, look at these!

Cord Cover Tutorial

I occasionally make things and think, "I should photo this and make a nifty tutorial to share my knowledge." Today I decided to do it! My daughter's room is in the process of being redecorated to her "big girl room" (although she still sleeps in her baby bed, I am thinking ahead!) and recently hung a cute shabby chic-y chandelier lamp in the corner of her room. I immediately noticed a need for the cord to be covered up.

Ewww, that just looks shabby, and definitely not chic. I *knew* this was something I could make, but wasn't sure if I'd *ever* have the time to do, so I looked around online and in town for a cheap cord cover. No luck. So I resigned to add it to my mile-long to-do list and picked up one yard of white polyester satin fabric at Hobby Lobby. Total cost about $2.50. Then I set off, camera at my side, to put this baby together. It is SO EASY! It took me 30 minutes start to finish. Here are the steps I followed:

Decide how long you want your cover, and how "poofy" you want it to be. It needs to be two to three times as long as the cord itself. Mine is 20 feet long. I wanted mine pretty full so I cut 5 inch strips, all the way through the width of the fabric. What I ended up with was four sections 60 inches long by 5 inches wide. Sorry the photo is blurry :(

Next, take two of your strips, RIGHT sides together, and sew them together, like so:

(Note: I am using my serger for this project, but a regular sewing machine can also be used just as easily. A serger is a machine that uses four spools of thread and two needles to make a professional finished seam as well as cut off the seam allowance all at once.)

Repeat for the remaining strips, so you end up with one very long skinny strip of fabric. Here is the seam from the RIGHT side.

Next you will want to finish both ends of the cover. I got lazy and just serged the edges so they won't fray, but you can (and probably should) turn the edge under and sew it down with your machine. I took a photo of both options.

Next, fold your cover in half, RIGHT sides together longways, and sew edges together, making a long skinny tube of fabric.

Now is the hard part; turning the tube out. You can use a turner tool if you have one, or a large safety pin will work. Depending on how long your cover is, this may take a while. Don't get frustrated! You're almost finished!

Now you have a cord cover!! Slip over the cord, scrunch, and viola!

The Red White and Blue Festival in Bullard was so fun! I love this festival. It's my second year to be involved over there and both times have been fantastic-- well-organized, well-advertised, and just loads of fun. It was only a one-day event this year, so not as exhausting! I'll definitely keep it on my very short list of shows for the future. My husband keeps telling me to stop doing outdoor shows, but I just don't listen! Well, honey, I'm starting to hear you... now that the weather is getting cooler (can't say cold exactly, since it's still high 70s here in TX in November) but the thought of dragging all the tables, tent, boxes, and racks out for a day of unpredictable weather, and even more unpredictable sales, does not appeal to me. Especially when I have to put off my list of special orders, which currently is quite lengthy.

SO... I'm hunkering down for a winter sew-in now. I've got a few deadlines to complete -- some self-inflicted, and some buyer requested-- that I'm going to be working toward now. I am absolutely still open to orders, so browse, buy, order, and share! I'm already working on a spring line, and am excited to see how that turns out. Times are fun!

Festivals

The Rose Festival was a wash.... again. I will not be participating next year unless it is moved back to Bergfeld Park. (My husband tells me I said that last year... well this year I really mean it!) It didn't help that the fabulous weather forgot to show up and it was cold, damp, and generally icky outside.

I have another show coming up next weekend, November 7th, in downtown Bullard. This was my favorite and most successful show last year, so I am looking forward to it again. And my friend Shelly will be sharing booth space with me, so even more fun will be had! Nothing like hanging out with a crafty friend, although Shelly will tell you she is anything but crafty (she just hasn't realized it yet!!). Come out and see us Saturday, November 7th from 8-5ish, right smack in the middle of downtown Bullard!

Nursing Cover

Thanks to my girl Jill and her husband Joshua who took - literally- over 200 pictures for us of Jill modeling her nursing covers. They have an adjustable D-ring neck strap, NO boning -- I'm kinda against the whole stiff neck thing, besides the fact that someone else has already copyrighted the idea, I always wanted to be able to move the neck totally closed if I wanted to, so I left the boning out. The bottom has a contrasting fabric that matches the neck strap. My covers are generous in size --long enough to cover your whole lap and wide enough to reach around both sides. They also have two pieces of wide ribbon on the sides that you can tuck under you to secure the cover from wind or flailing infant arms.. you know what I mean!

Scrapskirt

Inspiration hits, and I have to run with it. Tonight I was staring at a pile of scraps, getting ready to price together some tiny preemie outfits, and had the top part of this skirt that needed finishing, so I started grabbing and cutting, and 45 minutes later, I have a really awesome scrappy skirt that I am TOTALLY wearing to lunch tomorrow with my girlfriends!

The story behind this skirt is it was part of a dress that turned out looking quite frumpy, so I chopped off the skirt and made the dress into a top. I haven't photo'd that one yet. Same orange theme (obviously, since they were originally the same garment). Guess that's not much of a story! I don't make many things for myself, but when I got all my fabrics in, I couldn't stand just looking at them on the shelf.

Anyway, he she is!

The sweet thing about this skirt is that is has no front or back, only side seams, and can be any length. All I need is a waist measurement and a length preference. Oh, and artistic freedom to come up with something awesome!

Custom Outfit

This is what I can do when you bring me a fabric (or two, or three, or four!) you love! My friend Charity brought me these two coordinates and a spool of ribbon because she loved the colors and pattern, and here's what I made for her sweet daughter Abigail.

I ruffled the ribbon with my handy dandy ruffling attachment (I really don't think I could live or do business without it!) and made a nice textured trim for the hem on the shorts and top. Fun!!

.... elasticized neck for safety and fabric shoulder ties... completely adorable!!

This is a Tooth Fairy Pillow I worked up real quick this week. I'm embarrassed at the poor picture.. I thought it had come out better. The ribbon accent is yellow. I also failed to get a photo of the back of the pillow, which had a shiny silver "...zoom zoom..." embroidered on the bottom right corner.

I will be making more of these! Such a cute little thing you need when your baby gets his or her first loose tooth!

Made these for a friend and her adorable daughter.. used a new pattern, and love it! the neck strap and ties are all one LONG tie, inserted though a casing at the arm. Completely adjustable, and it ties in the back up high, kinda right where a bra strap goes, so it's comfy too!

Embroidery and monogramming!!

AlexiaJean would like to announce the addition of custom monogramming and embroidery to my line of products and services! I have recently added a new member to my family of machines. Now I have three, all being used!

My prices start at $8 per design, and I can add a name or monogram to all of my clothing for that price as well. So this works two ways: bring me something to monogram, OR purchase something handmade by me with a monogram added.

I picked up this cute little skort for my daughter at the CCC sale a couple of weeks ago, only to discover she has nothing to go with it!

Being the crafty mommy I am, I stashed it away in my office until epiphany hit. And here it is!

I stared at the blank white tshirt for a minute or so, and then looked closely at the little OshKoshy flower, and thought to myself, "I have those same colors of rick-rack!" So I set out to make a replica flower (okay, maybe replica is too strong a word here) but hey, it turned out cute! Especially for a $4 resale skort, and a $3.50 plain white tank top... not bad for an experiment!
